Secondary Parent-Teacher Conferences: A Misnomer If Ever One Existed
Facilitator(s): Wendy Houlihan, Rick Biskup

Workshop   +   Community Connections: parent involvement   +   High School
For decades, Yarmouth High School followed the traditional formula for parent/teacher conferences. On a designated day, parents came and "conferenced" about their child. The traditional five-minute teacher "report out" on a student's grade and perfunctory teacher comments did not approach adherence to the Coalition Common Principles. Change was imminent, and a new model incorporating the investigation and analysis of student work by the student and her parents was developed. In this workshop we will role-play a traditional conference, brainstorm alternatives, view a PowerPoint presentation incorporating Yarmouth's new conference process, and watch a video of an actual conference using the new format.
