Looking for an Argument? The Urban Academy Course in Inquiry Learning
Facilitator(s): Ann Cook, Avram Barlowe

Workshop   +   Classroom Practice: classroom culture   +   High School
"Looking for an Argument" is an inquiry-based course offered at the Urban Academy Laboratory High School. Open to students in grades 9-12, the course is designed to focus students on a myriad of essential skills: debate, note-taking, reading and highlighting, essay writing, consideration of multiple perspectives, and critiquing. Each week, two teachers debate an issue in the news. Tackling questions such as, "Should our society jail athletes for violent acts committed during an athletic contest? Should there be laws about who can be a parent? Should we provide help to foreign countries when they experience natural disasters?" students join the conversation, then work through a series of activities designed to improve their skills in analysis and writing. A video and class materials will be shared with participants.
