Publish or Perish: Using Stories from the Classroom to Offset the Dominance of Large-Scale Assessment in the Media
Facilitator(s): Peggy Silva

Workshop   +   Community Connections: community as resource   +   High School
The public has been led to believe that student achievement can be reduced to a single number or percentage on a large-scale assessment. As we deal with the effects of the dominance of and endless conversations about testing, we must recognize that we have not used the power of our personal experience to make our practice public to our communities. Writing is a powerful tool to change perception and engage a variety of constituencies. Through small-group discussion, individual writing and reflection, we will explore local opportunities to highlight our work with students and think about various publishing opportunities for our writing.
