| Roundtable + Classroom Practice: curriculum & instruction + Middle School |
| A common practice in middle schools today is to track students for reading instruction. Poor readers are often pulled out for remediation. Too often reading/literacy is expected to be embedded in content areas where teachers often struggle with how to handle the various levels of their students; many are ill-equipped to tackle reading/literacy instruction within their content areas. With the help of a Kellogg Foundation Grant, the Michigan CES center developed "Real Reading in the Middle," an integrated reading/literacy program that approaches the issue of equity and inclusive practices for all students. MCES associates will conduct this roundtable discussion examining the challenges schools face in following the tenth Common Principle when integrating a school-wide reading/literacy focus. |
